Let’s talk about creating a midsummer refresh for our homes. By the time August rolls around, we’re two months into summer. Our homes, and let’s be honest, us, can show signs of wear and tear from summer. So when you’re deep into summer, how can you freshen up and continue to savor the summer season? I’m glad you asked! I’m going to share several ideas to help freshen up your home and keep those summer vibes rolling in for the last 6 weeks of summer.

While August signals back-to-school time for families everywhere, and starts shifting us into fall mode, there is still a lot of summer left. Be sure to check out our blog post on getting ready for back to school season here.

For those of you who don’t have children at home, the deep heat of August tells us fall is anything but close.  Summer doesn’t technically end until the Autumnal Equinox on September 22nd, 2024, so keep your pumpkin spice lattes waiting for at least another month.

Creating A Midsummer Refresh For Your home by Bringing in Fresh Flowers & Fruit

Summer’s bounty of fresh flowers can still be found everywhere! Roadside farm stands, farmer’s markets, your own yard and even the grocery store are full of beautiful seasonal flowers. Bring home or pick a bunch and place them in a vase on your kitchen table, coffee table or anywhere you’ll pass by frequently and enjoy.  I love flowers and gift myself a beautiful bouquet every week.

To keep your flowers fresh, be sure to snip the ends before placing them in fresh water. Dissolve 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar per quart of warm water. Change the water every few days and keep your flowers out of direct sunlight.

Indoors bowls of bright citrus fruit still bring summer vibes to your space. Place them in a clear glass bowl and set on kitchen, dining, coffee or entryway tables.

Refresh Your Outdoor Spaces for Midsummer With A Porch Decor Update

Giving your porch a refresh can keep your home feeling fresh and help resist the urge to add the fall decor yet. If your 4th of July decorations are still up, now is a great time to change them out.

Treat yourself to a fun new porch rug if yours is looking tired. Add faux or real flowers to your porch. Deep summer makes us think of hot colors. Yellows, pinks, oranges and reds are perfect for this time of year. A wreath or pot of faux or real sunflowers will carry into your fall decor but are perfect for the long August days. Orange, white and brown dried hydrangea also look stunning on a summer porch.

Freshen Up Additional Outdoor Spaces For Summer

While you’re doing a porch refresh, be sure to sweep off front and back decks, porches or patios. Lawn clippings, sand and dirt and plant matter from the garden tend to congregate here.

For our gardeners out there, take a moment to wipe down, brush off and sweep off patio furniture that may have become a little messy from bringing in your bounty.

Wipe down and change out outdoor tablecloths. Wipe down and shake out cushions.

Get A Refreshed Home This Summer With Indoor Clean-Up

When it comes to the indoors, sand, dirt and grass easily make their way in. Now is a great time to vacuum, sweep and dust to refresh your space.

Start by changing your air filter if it’s been awhile. Depending on your air filter type, they typically need replaced at least every three months, if not every month.

Starting with the highest traffic areas. Sweep and do a thorough mop. Pressed for time? Go ahead and vacuum instead of sweeping your hard surface floors. While not always as thorough, this is a great way to get things cleaned in a pinch.

Next address any other common areas that seem most in need of some attention and love. A quick dust with a swiffer followed by a vacuum of family room and living room floors can do wonders to spruce up a space.

Freshen Your Summertime Space With A Simmer Pot

Finally, freshen up your space with scents. Summer scents lean towards fresh, light and clean. To give your space a little freshen up, make an easy simmer pot on the stove.

To get a light fresh scent for summer, throw any citrus rinds and some herbs such as rosemary into a pot with water and let it simmer away for a fresh clean smell.
