5 Tips for Decluttering Your Home Office

Is your home office in disarray? Don’t worry; we can help!

In March, our founder, Lisa Ciao, hosted a masterclass inside the Influential Entrepreneurs Facebook community where she discussed how to declutter your home office and boost productivity. We recommend joining the community to watch it at your leisure.

Since we have office cleaning and decluttering on our minds, let’s expand and discuss how you can declutter your home office. Here are my top five tips!

Section off the Office

If your home office hasn’t had a good cleaning in some time, it may feel a bit overwhelming to start as you look around and see all of the dirt and clutter. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, section off your office and work on one area at a time. It will reduce the overwhelm, minimize the desire to procrastinate, and it’ll boost your productivity and focus since you’re not trying to tackle the entire room at once.

Separate Items into Piles

As you begin to work through the clutter in your home office, it’s important to sort through the items and determine which things you will keep, toss, donate, or sell. You’ll also be creating a pile for any items that don’t belong in the office. You know, the ones that randomly get placed in there for no good reason. Create a separate pile for them too.

Remove Items and Put Away

Now that you have organized items into piles, you’ll want to remove anything in your office that doesn’t belong and put it away where it should be stored or find a place to put the items. Your office’s items should be what you need to use to get a job done, not be the extra random storage space.

Invest in Storage Containers

Investing in storage containers and purchasing other office supplies to help with the clutter is wise. It will help you declutter the office, find a viable storage solution, and it’ll help you organize the items that need to be kept in the office. There is no need to spend a lot of money either; you can find some inexpensive items at your local Dollar Store that’ll work just fine. If you or your significant other are handy, you can always build your storage options for the office. Of course, we also recommend labeling your items so that it’s easier to find them later.

Now, of course, after you have completed all of those tasks above, it’s time to clean, disinfect, sanitize, and put everything away. From there, let’s talk about the last and final decluttering tip – creating new habits!

Create New Habits

Clutter forms over time when cleaning and organizing aren’t a priority. Therefore, consider creating new habits that will help you to keep on top of the clutter and minimize the dust that accumulates in your home office. By establishing new habits, you’ll help keep your office clean and decluttered; it’ll boost your productivity and creativity too!

As you can see, decluttering doesn’t have to become overwhelming or be extremely time-consuming. When you have a strategy and system in place, you can quickly tackle any room in your home that needs some extra attention. Creighton Abrams said, “When eating an elephant, take one bite at a time.” It’s the same philosophy when you’re tackling an area of your home that needs some serious attention, whether it be cleaning, decluttering, or both.
